Molloy Students Commit to DYM in Grace-filled Day
Thirteen young adults made a yearlong commitment to Molloy University’s Dominican Young Adult Chapter on Sunday, April 7, 2024 during Mass at the Motherhouse. As part of their commitment, they pledged to live out the four pillars of Dominican Life (prayer, study, community and mission) in their everyday lives through praying alone and communally, studying the Word of God and the Signs of the Times, and participating in local monthly chapter meetings.
“We, the Dominican Sisters and guests, had the privilege of witnessing their commitment,” said S. Gina Fleming, promoter of youth for the Congregation. “It had been nearly four years, due to the COVID pandemic, since we have been able to have a ceremony such as this. As the sisters, associates, and other guests looked on these young people, beaming with joy and enthusiasm, committed themselves to being more closely connected to our Congregation and claiming their identities as part of our Dominican Family.”
Later that day, the students, associates and sisters got to know each other at an ice cream social.
“It was wonderful to see the students meeting our elderly sisters and interacting with them,” continued Sister Gina. “Of course, sharing ice cream sundaes, with all the toppings, was a must.”
As part of the afternoon, the sisters, associates, and young adults were introduced to the We Move Forward Together committee, an initiative that invites individuals and groups to connect with sisters through mission. The students learned about the variety of programs that have been offered and are currently being offered both in person and online for them to get more involved in. They were encouraged to become ambassadors for the committee by letting their families and friends know about the varied programs.

Telling Our Stories With Newness
Facilitator: Miriam Brown, OP
What could happen when we tell the stories of our lives through a new lens? During this season of Easter and springtime, it is time to rise up and recognize the resurrections that have happened in our own lives.
We all have wounds, have made mistakes, and have tendencies to envy the gifts of others. We often tell our stories from places of distress.
What happens when we tell the stories of our lives through a fresh lens of new life and grace? What strengths and gifts have we developed because of the negatives? Come for a day together to “practice resurrection.”
Saturday, April 27, 2024; offered in person

Spirituality of the Cosmos

Through the benefits of science and the contributions of many great thinkers, the generations alive today have new insights on our universe. This webinar will develop a non-anthropocentric spirituality by looking to the Cosmos as a primary source of wisdom. By considering patterns in how the Universe behaves as it waxes and wanes in stars, Earth, and her creatures, we draw insights into the spirituality of the Cosmos and glean wisdom for an appreciation of ourselves in relationship to God, Earth, and each other.

Beyond Words – An Icon Workshop (In-Person)
Monday, Apr 22 – Friday, Apr 26 • 9:00 am – 4:30 pm
GRAND RAPIDS, MI –An icon in Christianity is a religious work of art, usually a flat panel painting depicting a holy being or sacred image. Icon means a symbol or image, even though an icon is an image created with paints, icons are written, not painted. The tradition of iconography has been handed down through the centuries from master iconographers to apprentices through a process of prayer, fasting and learning the skills and techniques necessary to create these images for sacred worship spaces, monasteries, and homes. To contemplate or gaze at an icon is to behold a beauty that is ‘beyond words”. Dominican Center is offering you a rare opportunity to create your own Christian icon during a weeklong icon workshop. Participants will learn about and complete an icon called “The Holy Face.” During this workshop, Diane will help you find your divine eyes, to see through the holy eyes of the icon, deeper into the beauty that surrounds you. She will gently guide students through a step-by-step process of creating their own icon using demonstration, instruction, and prayer. Participants will take home a completed icon by the end of the week. All supplies will be provided in the cost of the workshop. No previous experience is necessary. For more information call 616-514-3325 or visit dominicancenter.com. Deepening the Call of Spiritual Direction: Self-Awareness in the Supervisory Process (In-Person)
Saturday, May 4 • 9:15 am – 4:00 pm
GRAND RAPIDS, MI –Spiritual directors not only listen to the Spirit and directees, but also to themselves. It is in this place of awareness that we are invited to be converted towards God. This in-person retreat day is a place for active spiritual directors to hone our skills at self-awareness, develop healthy practices for peer supervision, and nourish our sacred call to listening. Sister Janice Bachman, OP, will lay a foundation of noticing the movements in the conversion process toward God within directors and their directees, then guide us through teaching and roleplays as to how these dynamics can play out in peer supervision. Tuesday Table Talk — Uncovering Our Disconnection: An Uncomfortable & Essential Conversation (In-Person)
Tuesday, May 7 • 6:00 – 8:30 pm
GRAND RAPIDS, MI –Join us for an interfaith Tuesday Table Talk as we gather for dinner and conversation. In this pervasive and seemingly unending season of heightened polarity and isolation, we are faced with new and evolving barriers that prevent us from connecting with our neighbors. For many of us, the temptation to jump headfirst into spaces of reimagining and creation is strong, and as such, we often elide the essential step of pausing to grieve in community, to name our pain, and to stand in support of each other through trying times. Venture with us into unformed, unknown, and uncomfortable territory. We will hear from the prophetic voices of young clergy in the West Michigan area as we give air to our communal disconnect. By first sitting together and honoring the realities of our isolation, we can begin to build real solidarity. For more information call 616-514-3325 or visit dominicancenter.com. SoulCollage® What is Growing in your Soul Garden? (In-Person)
Saturday, Jun 15 • 10:00 am – 12:30 pm
GRAND RAPIDS, MI –Every seed is an invitation to grow something new. As we think together about what we wish to grow, we will ask ourselves these questions: What seeds are ready to be planted in our soul? How can we hold steady in transition as the unknown is beckoning? What does it look like to trust the potential of transformation? How can we do this without caving into fear? SoulCollage® is a process where we take our longings and our fears and make a visual card to represent those aspects of our soul that need tending. Using found images, we create snapshots of where we are at the moment, and what we might be leaning towards. The cards are fascinating vehicles to uncover hidden parts of yourself—as well as creating cards for the support you find around you in your life. Whether you create one card or a whole deck, the process is sure to bring insight and encouragement to your life. For more information call 616-514-3325 or visit dominicancenter.com. Associate Spotlight: Rob Cammarata, Amityville
Rob Cammarata, an associate of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville, will be leading a special workshop called “Faith Divided: Christian Nationalism and the Challenge of Catholic Social Teaching” on April 10 at 7PM via Zoom sponsored by the We Move Forward Together Committee.
Christian Nationalism is the belief that our country is defined by Christianity, and that the government should promote it above others. This workshop “is very relevant to our faith and our world today,” said Cammarata. It asks important questions like: “Why are we divided and how can we, who are disciples of Jesus, help heal the divisions that exist, especially at this point in time?”
Rob is a seasoned preacher, who has been pursuing a calling in the Church for decades. He earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees concentrating in Theology and Management/Administration. His first full-time ministry was as a Director of Religious Education and Youth Ministry at a parish in New Jersey. He also worked as a Director of Religious Education at St. Peter of Alcantara in Port Washington, NY and St. Gertrude in Bayville, NY.
But most people on Long Island know Rob for his role as Director of the Diocesan Office of Parish Stewardship. He was a popular speaker, encouraging others to use their gifts to connect with God and the community. That position opened him up to the larger Church. “I was invited to become a speaker and workshop presenter at many international and national Catholic conferences,” he explained. He also co-wrote a children’s book called, “Taking Care of God’s Gifts: Stewardship, a Way of Life” with another Amityville Dominican Associate Laurie Whitfield. It was printed three times in 11 countries!
Most recently, he has served at parishes. At St. Brigid’s Church in Westbury, he served as Pastoral Associate for Administration for 17 years. Now, you can find him at St. Matthew’s Church in Dix Hills as the Parish Business Manager.
In between these full-time ministries, he has inspired others as a teacher. He taught theology and Catholic Social Teaching courses at Molloy University in Rockville Centre, NY. He also taught adult courses at the Pastoral Formation Institute — School of Missionary Disciples for the Diocese, as well as leading in-service courses on theology for teachers. He has inspired engaged couples by leading them through Pre-Cana courses before their wedding days. With Dominican Associate Suzanne Richards, this past summer, he taught a leadership program for Dominican interns. They will be leading that course again this summer!
Cammarata was inspired to teach by the wonderful Dominican sisters he encountered as a student at Our Holy Redeemer in Freeport, NY and St. Agnes High School in Rockville Centre, NY.
“The many Dominican sisters I had for teachers and colleagues that I came to know over the years, in my opinion, all were signs of ‘joy and hope’ – living out the Holy Preaching in wonderful ways,” said Cammarata.
Cammarata has been an associate for 14 years! He is grateful to Amityville Dominican Sister Marjorie McGregor who, along with others, who encouraged him to bond with the Congregation. “ It has been and continues to be a wonderful journey,” said Cammarata. “I believe that being a Dominican Associate, for me, is one of the most wonderful ways I can live out my discipleship: connected with a community of prophets, teachers, and healers. It can’t get much better than being around all the wisdom, knowledge, and wonderful faith life these women espouse and foster! They are truly great women of our church – and their work and ministry has helped tens of thousands of God’s people. Amazing!”

Centering Prayer (Online)
Tuesdays • Noon
Centering Prayer is a modernized prayer method based on the intuitive prayer rooted in Lectio Divina. It is a method of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplative prayer, prayer in which we experience the Divine’s immanent presence with us. Centering Prayer is grounded in relationship with God, through Christ, and is a practice to nurture that relationship. This method of prayer complements and supports other modes of prayer — verbal, mental, or affective prayer — and facilitates resting in the Divine Presence. Centering Prayer offers a way to grow in intimacy with God, moving beyond conversation to communion. For more information call 616-514-3325 or visit dominicancenter.com. Telling Our Stories with Newness
In this season of Easter and springtime, it is time to rise up and admit our resurrections. We all have wounds, made bad mistakes, were hurt by others, have tendencies in our temperaments that make us envy the gifts of others. We tell ourselves these stories of distress. So let us try telling our stories with new life and grace in mind. What strengths and gifts have we developed because of those negatives? Come for a day together to “practice resurrection.”

Spirituality of the Cosmos (Virtual Retreat)
Through the benefits of science and the contributions of many great thinkers, the generations alive today have new insights on our universe. This webinar will develop a non-anthropocentric spirituality by looking to the Cosmos as a primary source of wisdom. By considering patterns in how the Universe behaves as it waxes and wanes in stars, Earth, and her creatures, we draw insights into the spirituality of the Cosmos and glean wisdom for an appreciation of ourselves in relationship to God, Earth, and each other.
