Faith and Film: The Greatest Showman

The Greatest Showman is a hit from the Christmas season, still going strong into February, quite unusual for a movie today, in which most are in and out of theaters in a few weeks. The movie is a musical biography of the 19^th Century American showman P.T. Barnum, played by Hugh Jackman. Most notably, Barnum is credited with creating the modern day circus, with animal acts, acrobats, trapeze artists, and side show acts like General Tom Thumb, the smallest man on earth, and a bearded lady.

OP West Meets with Newer Members

OP West (group region of Dominican Sister congregations) met on January 29 and 30, 2018 at the Mission San Jose Dominicans’ Motherhouse. Surrounded by the beauty and warmth of California and the oranges growing and the flowers blooming, this was a mid-winter oasis for the sisters from the Northwest!

Our agenda for this meeting came out of our meeting in Grand Rapids prior to the Dominican Sisters Conference meeting. We focused our discussion on Mary Pellegrino’s presentation at the 2017 LCWR Assembly and wondered if Mary’s article would have the same resonance on newer members.

Dominican Sisters of Tacoma Receive Gift of Heritage Room

Sisters and Associates view the three panels depicting our early history, our schools’ history and our present-day ministries. The desk in the back belonged to our foundress, Mother Thomasina Buhlmeier.

This year the sisters and associates celebrated Foundation Day by dedicating a Heritage Room housed at Marymount-LeMay Family Collection. This 129^th anniversary of our founding on October 24, 1888 in Pomeroy, WA held special significance for us as we realized a permanent Heritage Room depicting our history and housing memorable artifacts.
