Adrian Associate Recognized for 44 Years In Refugee Resettlement Ministry

November 22, 2019, Oakland, California – Sister Elisabeth Lang, OP, a Dominican Sister of Vietnam and an Adrian Dominican Associate, received a service award from Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Oakland, California, for her 44 years of ministry in the diocese’s refugee resettlement program. The award presentation took place during a tribute luncheon hosted by Catholic Charities East Bay, where Adrian Dominican Sister Marian Castelluccio, OP, also ministers. As the leaves changed their colors in mid-October in Adrian, Michigan, 57 Dominican Sisters, Nuns, Friars, Laity, Associates, and friends gathered at the Dominican Preaching Network’s North American Preaching Colloquium to join in conversation about passing the torch of preaching.

Fr. Anthony Gittins, CSSp, from Catholic Theological Union set the tone in his presentation “Evangelization in the Mission of Jesus and in Our Mission as Church” by outlining the core of evangelization in how Jesus lived the mission: through proclamation, witness, dialogue, liberation, encounter, table-fellowship, foot-washing, and crossing boundaries. It is our responsibility, Fr. Gittins said, to participate in the mission of God.

Dominican Sisters of Amityville: Climate Rally

On Sept. 20, 250,000 young people and other climate advocates gathered in NYC alongside Greta Thunberg. Amityville Dominican Sisters protested locally at a peaceful demonstration in front of Congressman Peter King’s Office in Massaepequa, NY. In attendance were: Sisters Barbara Schwarz, Jeanne Clark, Eileen Corcoran, Margaret Galiardi, Eileen McCormick, Catherine O’Shea, Lorraine Liebold and Associate Ginny Campbell.

“It was such a joy to be with the people in support of the youth and the climate strike,” said S. Jeanne Clark who attended the event. Thinking of mountain top mining practices, the continued use of fossil fuels, and so many other environmental crises, S. Jeanne applauded Greta Thunberg as she scolded the UN with the words, “How dare you?”

“As Dominicans it is such a part of our charism to tell the truth, and Greta Thunberg is real truth teller,” said S. Jeanne. “We need to be there with these young people! It’s the young people, the next generation who are calling for change! The earth and young people need elders, people of wisdom, who have so much life experience.”
