Dominican Sister of Caldwell Gerardine Mueller, OP, Honored by SOAR!

At the recent New York Awards Dinner for SOAR! (Supporting our Aging Religious) held at the New York Athletic Club, Sister Gerardine Mueller was presented with the Father Victor Yanitelli, SJ, Award for devoting her life to sacred art, the training and mentoring of students of all ages in the arts, and her remarkable ability to bring out the best in each of the artists she has helped develop. Cardinal Tobin and many of our sisters, associates and friends attended the evening. Fellow awardees included Father Edwin Leahy, OSB, Headmaster at St. Benedict’s Prep (Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Award) and members of the Notre Dame Clubs of the Archdiocese of New York (Dorothy Day Award).

Dominican Sister of Amityville Margaret Mayce, OP, is Sent Forth as DSI Coordinator in Rome

In October, Sister Margaret Mayce will head to Rome to claim her new position as the International Coordinator for Dominican Sisters International, DSI. It is an umbrella organization that was founded in 1995 which gathers 150 Dominican congregations from more than a hundred countries with the goal of strengthening the communication and collaboration in the Dominican family, especially among apostolic sisters. The headquarters is in Rome, Italy.

The ironic twist is that while S. Margaret hopes to unite the voices of Dominican sisters around the world, she will do so in whispered tones. After a recent surgery, her vocal chords were left damaged. At a recent Mass at the Motherhouse, she wondered out loud to our congregation, “How can I be a preacher with only half a voice?”

“June 29 was a significant moment for the Sisters of St. Dominic of Tacoma. We gathered at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Burien, WA, for the formal installation of Sister Jo Ann Showalter, SP, as our Pontifical Commissary. (Commissary is not a word we associate with a leader, but in Italian, commissario does mean leader, or one who is sent. Using more familiar language, we will refer to her as our Congregation Leader.)

The nine-year journey completes the structural parts of our covenant with the Sisters of Providence, Mother Joseph Province (MJP). Our sisters needing assisted or skilled care have resided at St. Joseph Residence for over 25 years, our financial management is taken care of at the Providence Provincial Office in Renton, and our governance […].”
