McGreal Center for Dominican Historical Studies: ‘A New Chapter in Dominican History’

Dominican friar and scholar Edward Schillebeeckx famously wrote, “Stories of the Dominican Order keep us ‘together’ as Dominicans. Without a record we would be void of remembrances of the past, we would not find our own place in the present and remain without hope of expectations of the future.”

Since she began her doctoral studies in American history at the University of Notre Dame to her appointment as assistant professor of history at Dominican University to the founding of the Sister Mary Nona McGreal Center for Dominican Historical Studies, Sr. Janet Welsh, OP has been steadfast and passionate in pursuing the mission of truth Fr. Schillebeeckx articulated. Her vision and leadership have created a unique and active center for the research and writing of the history of the Order of Preachers in the United States revealing the Dominican family’s significance in the life of the church and the nation. Truly a Dominican family treasure! After more than a decade as the McGreal Center’s director, Sr. Janet has decided to retire from her ministry. She is ready to entrust its mission and vision to new leadership, and follow God’s call into a new chapter in her own history.

‘Dominican Young Adults Help in Aftermath of Hurricane Maria’

“During the week of July 16, 2019, ten young people, who are members of Dominican Young Adults USA traveled to Puerto Rico to offer their time and talents to the people who had been most affected by the devastating hurricane.”

The Young adults were Eileen Connolly and Sal Ubaldini from the Molloy Chapter; Mary Elizabeth Dristle and Christina Maretzo from the St. Thomas Aquinas Chapter; Natalie Infante, Sinead Reilly and Nicolette Agresta from the Dominican College Chapter and Solanyi Rodriguez, Suheily Rodriguez Anamika Sharma Paudel from the Caldwell Chapter. These young adults are part of the Dominican Youth Movement whose aim is to continue the tradition of preaching through word and action, using their own unique talents. Read article

‘Students from 18 Dominican Schools Respond to the Call to Preach with their Lives’

July 1, 2019, Adrian, Michigan – The campuses of Siena Heights University and the Adrian Dominican Sisters’ Motherhouse were a beehive of energy, joy, and community June 25-30, 2019, as 76 students and their mentors from 18 Dominican High Schools participated in the 21st Annual Dominican High Schools Preaching Conference.

“I’ve been very fortunate to meet a lot of other people and I’ve become very welcomed into this Dominican community,” said Grace Rado, a student from Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, Illinois. “I’ve found that there are a lot of other young people who are on the same path and we’re all learning to walk in God’s light and to preach.”

DYMUSA Forges Ahead as College “Preaching in Action” Conference Celebrates its 17th Year

From May 22-27, 2018, 38 students from Dominican Colleges/Universities and colleges with a Dominican presence gathered at Caldwell University, Caldwell, NJ, for the National College “Preaching in Action” Conference.

The Conference, now in its 17th year, is a collaborative response to our desire as Dominicans to introduce college students to the foundations and characteristics of Dominican Preaching. We actively engage students in prayer, preaching the Word, service, community, and modeling creative ways to make preaching a living dynamic in their daily lives.
