Dominican Sisters Conference Announces Interim Director

February 24, 2020 — The Executive Committee of the Dominican Sisters Conference is pleased to announce that Mary Ellen O’Grady, OP (Sinsinawa) will serve as the Interim Director of the DSC as of April. She will serve in this role while a Search Committee begins its work to name a new Executive Director. The former Executive Director, Sr. Pat Farrell, OP, has taken a position at Santa Sabina Retreat Center, San Rafael, CA. Pat will conclude her DSC service March 22.

Having met Dr. Donyelle McCray at the Academy of Homiletics at Princeton Theological Seminary in December, I was inspired by this fresh new voice about the spirituality and pedagogy of preaching. Dr. McCray, who teaches at Yale Divinity School, is an African American preacher of Baptist and Episcopalian background who writes about the spirituality of preaching with an exciting Catholic sensibility. Though I balked at the price of her beautifully manufactured 140-page book, I realize now that this is a fair price for such intelligent research and expression and a book worth considering for a Dominican community library. I kept imagining this account of the preacherly vocation of Julian of Norwich being read during meals at Dominican monasteries, and I imagined Julian’s story inspiring insight on the part of Dominican laity and apostolic sisters and friars, as well.

Dominican Sisters of Amityville: Congratulations to S. Eileen Carrig Who Was Honored by Alma Mater: St. Sebastian’s

Congratulations to Amityville Dominican Sister Eileen Carrig who was recognized on January 26, 2020 at a parish Mass at St. Sebastian’s Church in Brooklyn in honor of Catholic Schools Week.

S. Eileen received an award for Distinguished Alumni in Education for her 58 years in the field of education.

Her education ministry included teaching first grade in St. Patrick’s in Fort Hamilton; All Saints in Brooklyn; St. Joseph’s in Astoria. She is currently serving as the Administrative Assistant to the Principal in St. Agnes Academic High School in College Point. She worked with adults with developmental disabilities in the Christopher Residence in Valley Stream from 1985 to 1990 with S. Patricia Fox.

Caldwell Dominicans Develop Economic Justice Lesson Plan

Poverty is a human rights issue and one that calls each of us to do what we can to educate others on the plight of the underserved in our society. The Caldwell Dominicans’ Economic Justice Committee of the Commission on Global Issues believes the study of economics should begin early on in students’ lives via meaningful curriculum. Through literature, a child can gain insights into the needs of those who are impoverished and how one might respond. Understanding vocabulary terms, concepts of poverty, resources and other issues of economic justice have their beginnings when integrated within interesting stories.

Dominican Sisters of Peace Hold Founded Ministries Meeting

The Dominican Sisters of Peace welcomed ministry leaders from 13 sponsored ministries in 7 states for their annual Ministry Leader Gathering, held at the Martin de Porres Center in Columbus, OH, on February 19-20.

Ministries represented at this gathering included ecology centers, retreat centers, and learning centers. The theme of the meeting was “Carrying the Charism into Tomorrow” and explored issues such as sustainability/capacity, mission advancement, and resources for sharing the Dominican Charism to advisory council/board members.
