Grassroots, non-partisan, student-led organizations planned rallies and marches to protest gun violence in schools on March 24, 2018. Reports indicated that there were March For Our Lives gatherings in Washington DC and 800+ sibling marches across the globe.

Saturday, March 24, students from Parkland, Florida and throughout the country gathered in Washington DC and other cities across the U.S. calling on Congress to enact stricter guns laws. Dominican Sisters of Houston and Houston Dominican Family members joined thousands of students and adults marching in downtown Houston.
The sisters also hosted the annual Pax Christi Texas Conference on March 24. Prior to the Conference Dominican Sisters, members of Pax Christi and friends gathered for 17 minutes of silence at the entrance to the Dominican Motherhouse to be in solidarity with the students and their supporters.

“For the past six years, the Dominican Sisters International has been sending sisters to participate in the United Nation’s Commission on the Status of Women. This commission invites the Thinkers-Shakers-and-Doers to work together and strengthen their relationship to make our society a better place for all, especially for both women and girls. The theme for this year is ‘Empowering Rural Women and Girls.’”

Every year approximately 1,200 Dominican University members participate in an all-day symposium dedicated to study, and the celebration of the University’s motto, Caritas et Veritas (love and truth). The McGreal Center is a department of Dominican University where we participate every year in the Caritas/Veritas Symposiums. At the 2014 symposium, the Center shared with the University Community how “Team McGreal” lives the Caritas of our Motto:
Caritas in community requires respect for every person. When people come to work in the McGreal Center, we agree to respect one another. “Team McGreal” is a diverse team. We are an intergenerational group: our ages range from 19 to 80 years old. We represent various ethnic and racial groups, learning styles and religious traditions. Each one of us has a distinct personality! And we all work hard to practice the common belief that respect is the foundation for Caritas in community.
At the beginning of National Catholic Sisters Week, the two Dominican Congregations of Women Religious in Rockland County, the Sisters of Saint Dominic of Blauvelt, New York and the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill were recognized along with other religious communities in a Proclamation from the Town of Orangetown Supervisor, Chris Day.
This Proclamation formally deems March 8-14 as National Catholic Sisters Week in Orangetown and recognizes the Sisters of these congregations for their impact on society.
