On Sunday, October 30, Sister Heloise Cruzat welcomed sisters, family and friends to the Evening Prayer and Labyrinth of Remembrance and Thanksgiving sponsored by the Labyrinth Committee. The committee began offering this observance in the fall of 2005 with prayer and the opportunity of a labyrinth walk in the time prior to the liturgical feasts of All Saints and All Souls. This year’s observance was one of our local Order of Preachers 800 year Anniversary celebrations. Since the Order and the Dominican Sisters of Houston have a strong legacy in music and art, our customary prayer was expanded to include both music and art components.

Sr. Pauline Quinn, O.P.’s new book was released on October 14th and “captures a remarkable life in transformation.” The book shares Sr. Pauline’s profound story about overcoming struggles in life to find meaning and purpose and keeps with the Holy Father Francis’ want for the Church—“Pope Francis has called for a Church that is more welcoming to people with disabilities.” Read more

As part of a new program called D.R.E.A.M. Big, St. Agnes Academic High School in College Point (a sponsored ministry of the Dominican Sisters of Amityville) and Molloy College in Rockville Centre are working together to pair students’ passions with a taste of college courses. D.R.E.A.M. Big is an acronym for “Dominican Roots in Education at St. Agnes and Molloy College.”

In response to Pope Francis’ call for special regard for refugees in this Year of Mercy, Bishop Michael Barber, SJ, challenged each parish in our Oakland Diocese to “adopt” a family. St. Joseph Parish in Fremont along with two local motherhouses of Holy Family Sisters and Dominican Sisters attended the first informational meeting at Catholic Charities of the East Bay. Recognizing the need and hope of this project, a committee was formed for support of home items, transportation, housing and job search and of course financial donations.
