Faith and Film: Risen

Now that it’s Lent, with Easter a few weeks away, there are some religious movies making their way to mark this holy season. The first is an interesting movie called Risen.

Risen tells the story of the Roman Tribune Clavius who patrols the Judea around 33 A.D. Clavius is somewhat world-weary. He’s tired of battle and Jewish rebels and is eager to return to his family. Clavius is ordered by Pilate to watch over the crucifixion of Jesus. He is the one who orders a lance thrust into Jesus’ side, and secures the tomb with a large stone and soldiers to guard it so the body will not be stolen.

“Tapestry in Time: The Story of the Dominican Sisters, Grand Rapids, Michigan, 1966-2012”

DESCRIPTION

Vatican II radically transformed the Roman Catholic Church, including convents and monasteries, around the world. In this book several Dominican Sisters tell candidly what life was like for them in Grand Rapids, Michigan, during the decades after Vatican II. The story they tell is one of change, growth, and empowerment.

Organized around the four essentials of Dominican life — prayer, study, common life, and ministry — Tapestry in Time weaves together written and oral histories from the Sisters themselves to describe how the introduction of then-radical changes such as worship in the vernacular provided the thrill of something new and meaningful — but also how the move toward greater inclusivity led to challenges and opposition.

St. Mary’s Dominican High School – Mission Trip Brings Authentic Happiness and Appreciation

They may seem to have nothing, yet they have everything. This became noticeable to me after encountering the people of Bani. During the mid February Mardi Gras break, 22 members of St. Mary’s Dominican High School – students, alumnae, faculty, and parents, embarked on a journey to Bani, in the Dominican Republic. There, my perspective on life changed drastically. The trivial and miniscule items of my life suddenly became unimportant as I witnessed what little material wants the people of Bani actually had. However, they were rich in faith, study, and community. These are three of the four pillars of our school’s foundation. The fourth – ministry, was our mission.

Dominican Sisters of Hope Will Offer ‘Women Bearing Gifts Weekend Retreat at Mariandale’

The “Women Bearing Gifts” weekend retreat at Mariandale will be held Friday, April 29 to Sunday, May 1, 2016. The retreat allows “women to once again affirm and celebrate their own giftedness.”
