Mariandale Retreat and Conference Center – ‘A Life in Colors’

The artistic works of Dominican Sister of Hope, Sister Mary Ellen Wisner, OP will be on display at the Mariandale Retreat and Conference Center through September, 16, 2016. A Life in Colors features the mixed media work of this Dominican Sister of Hope who taught art for many years. In retirement she has been able to devote more time to her own work. S. Mary Ellen works in oils, water colors, and stained glass.

Sister Cecilia Canales, OP is New Congregational Prioress

The Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose elected Sister Cecilia Canales, OP as their new Congregational Prioress during the congregation’s 25th General Chapter. Sister Cecilia will assume leadership in the fall, replacing Sister Gloria Marie Jones, OP who completes her tenure in the post.

Convened every five years at their congregational center in Fremont, the chapter assembly elects new leaders and identifies mission priorities. The weeklong “Pilgrimage of the Heart” held July 23 – 30, 2016, included over 150 sister delegates and participants from the US and Mexico. Group discussions considered some challenges both countries face. The Sisters asked, “What is our mission in these times?” Their response, “Be women of hope in the face of violence and build bridges of love and understanding between our countries.”

‘Adrian Dominican Sisters to Dedicate Reflective Garden’

August 4, 2016, Adrian, Michigan – Members of the public are cordially invited to the dedication of the Adrian Dominican Sisters’ Dominican Life Center (DLC) Reflective Garden.

The ceremony begins at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, August 25, in the Reflective Garden, accessible through the main doors of the DLC. Following the dedication, guests are encouraged to enjoy refreshments and tour the garden.

Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt Gather with Maryknoll Sisters of St. Dominic

(1)Capture Maryknoll Sisters of St. Dominic, Inc. and Blauvelt Dominican Sisters gathered at Maryknoll, July 15-17, 2016. The primary purpose of the weekend was to provide opportunities for sisters in temporary profession to get to know one another. But the weekend also provided an important forum where significant sharing and collaboration between the two Dominican Congregations happened.

Sinsinawa Dominicans – ‘Learn the Ancient Art Form of Writing Icons’

Drazen Dupor teaches Sister Marcia Holthaus about the ancient art of icon writing. This was the second icon Sister Marcia has created.

SINSINAWA, Wis.—Drazen Dupor of Madison, Wis., will lead an Icon Retreat at Sinsinawa Mound August 14-19. Come learn about the history of iconography, the origin of icon writing, the first and most famous icon writers and the difference between wooden board and wall icons. Dupor learned the ancient art form in Thessalonica, Greece, at the K. N. Georgiadis School of Art under the supervision of Zlatko Bomestar. He will demonstrate the usage of ancient techniques in present times as you write your own icon.
