On Sunday, August 21, 2016, the parish communities of Holy Rosary and St. Stephen in Monroe City, MO gathered for the dedication and opening of a brand new Catholic elementary school. The Dominican Sisters of Sparkill have ministered at Holy Rosary School for 115 years, and the school’s new facility will offer a state-of-the-art learning environment to over 170 students. August 24, 2016, Adrian, Michigan – Mary Veen, a former Adrian Dominican Sister, formally reconnected with the Congregation as an Associate on August 13 during a special Ritual of Acceptance. The brief ceremony was held during Partners IV, an annual gathering of Adrian Dominican Associates at the Motherhouse in Adrian.

On August 20, 2016, Sister Francis Clare Fischer and Sister Mary Susanna Vasquez, Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose, began their adventure walking the Camino de Santiago. The sisters began their pilgrimage in St. Jean-Pied-de-Port on the French side of the Pyrenees and the pilgrimage will end about 500 miles later in Santiago, Spain. Read more

I remember first hearing the unusual story of Florence Foster Jenkins about 30 years ago. A friend had a recording of Florence singing the “Queen of the Night,” an aria from The Magic Flute. We laughed and laughed at the awful singing of Florence. He told me that Florence had been a cult celebrity many years ago and crowds would come to hear her sing, barely containing their laughter. Florence was a wealthy New York socialite and patroness of the arts who rented out Carnegie Hall and other concert venues so that she could sing, quite badly, before enthusiastic crowds. I wondered then if Florence knew that people were laughing at her. How did she feel about that?

On August 7, 2016, the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill celebrated St. Dominic’s Feast Day and held a special ceremony for the Associates. The gathering welcomed new Associate, Marisa Ganey, to the community; and Associate Kathryne Hof recommitted to the community for 5 years. Read article
