Hope Dominicans

In June, Dominican Sister of Hope Margaret Mary Rottinghaus, OP, was honored by Saint Rosalie’s Parish in Hampton Bays, New York, for more than 40 years of service as a home health nurse and most recently as a parish volunteer. In 1961, the Dominican Sisters Family Health Service in Hampton Bays had four sisters on the nursing staff; today, the staff of 100 people serves 700 people in the area. Dominican Sister of Peace Peggy Martin, OP (Peace), received the prestigious Sister Concilia Moran Award at the annual assembly of the Catholic Health Association in Washington, D.C. June 7–9. The award is CHA’s highest honor. Sister Peggy is the senior vice president, Sponsorship and Governance, for Denver-based Catholic Health Initiatives. “She is truly a visionary leader and trail blazer,” said Sister Gemma Doll, OP, councilor for the Dominican Sisters of Peace. “With her colleagues at CHI, she has helped facilitate new concepts, structures and solutions that take Catholic health care in new directions.” Read more

Siena Heights University

Sister Peg Albert, OP, Ph.D., president of Siena Heights University, received the 2015 Athena Leadership Award in recognition of her work in helping women to “achieve their full leadership potential.” The award ceremony took place May 12 in the University’s Dominican Hall in the presence of Siena Heights administration, faculty and staff; Adrian Dominican Sisters; and other active members of the Lenawee County, Michigan, community. Sister Peg was named the 10th president of Siena Heights University in 2006. Read more

Houston Dominicans

On May 1, 600 friends, former students, parents, and family members gathered at Msgr. Kelly Catholic High School in Beaumont, Texas, to honor Sister Emily Bordages, OP (Houston). Sister Emily has taught French for 50 years at the high school. Principal Roger Bemis announced a scholarship that has been established in Sister Emily’s name. Several people gave personal tributes to Sister Emily, including two former students, current faculty, and Sister Jane Meyer, OP (former teacher and principal at Kelly). The Most Reverend Curtis Guillory, SVD, DD, Bishop of the Beaumont Diocese, gave the invocation and a tribute as well.

Adrian Dominicans

Sister Joan Delaplane, OP (Adrian), will be remembered in a special way by preaching students at Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, Missouri. The Dominican graduate school dedicated its Delaplane Preaching Studio May 11 in the presence of Sister Joan, family and friends, local Adrian Dominican associates, and Aquinas faculty and staff. Funded by a grant from the Lilly Foundation, the Delaplane Preaching Studio offers state-of-the-art cameras—hidden in a room adjoining the studio—to record the preaching of the students in Aquinas’ Doctor of Ministry in Preaching program. Students from across the world can watch the preaching of classmates and offer their critiques. Read more
