June 1, 2017, Adrian, Michigan – May was a busy month for Associate Life as nine new Associates were welcomed, one in Michigan and eight in Florida. Associates are women and men, at least 18 years of age – married, single, widowed, or divorced – who make a non-vowed commitment to partner with the Adrian Dominican Sisters.

On May 7, 2017, the Dominican Sisters of Springfield welcomed 28 new associates. “The associate class included residents of Springfield, Bluffs, Auburn, Flossmoor, Jacksonville, Illiopolis, Galesburg, Pana, Steger, Lansing, Normal, Park Forest, Chicago Heights, South Holland, Orland Park, and Bloomington, Ill., Indiana residents of Munster and Hammond, and Mississippi residents of the Jackson area.” Read article
After twenty years of partnership with Our Lady of Good Counsel Church/Blessed Sacrament Parish, Aquinas Literacy Center is moving to a new location in McKinley Park as of July 1, 2017. Our new home, 1751 West 35th Street, offers ample space in a more visible location, next door to the local elementary school. Since 1996, Aquinas Literacy Center has offered individualized instruction in the English language to the adult immigrant population of McKinley Park and surrounding areas (Bridgeport, Back of the Yards and Brighton Park) of Chicago. Through one-on-one tutoring, combined with supplemental learning opportunities (conversation classes, book clubs and writing workshops) and a computer learning center, learners are empowered to transform their lives by acquiring skills to become successful parents, productive workers and responsible citizens. Annually, 150 volunteer literacy tutors instruct 200 adult learners. For more information please click here.

Dominican Volunteers USA extends a heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out to support DVUSA at the 2017 annual celebration of Praedicare: Set the World on Fire on April 22. Current Dominican Volunteer Kayla Grodzicki eloquently reflected on her experience as a Dominican Volunteer serving at Sarah’s Inn and living in the House of Connections community in Chicago. Dominican Sisters, former volunteers, friends and family shared an enjoyable evening of music, dancing, fun, and fellowship. April 27, 2017, Adrian, Michigan – History fans in Michigan are now familiar with Sister Ann Joachim Joachim, OP (1901-1981), a particularly colorful and prominent Adrian Dominican Sister, thanks to an article written by an Adrian Dominican Associate.
Arlene Bachanov’s article, “‘Sister Cannonball’: The Nun Who Shook Up Adrian,” was published in the May/June issue of Michigan History. The article details the amazing life of Sister Ann Joachim before and after she entered the Congregation and her influence on society.
