“With Hearts Inflamed” was the theme for this year’s Dominican Days at Marywood. About 275 sisters and associates were in attendance, with an ambitious agenda that included a reflection on the legacy of Vatican II from former prioresses, who have guided the congregation through the 50 years that have followed the opening of the Ecumenical Council. The gathering included reflection on the 2012 chapter direction statement and culminated in recognition of the 20th year of Associate Life and the annual salute to Jubilarians. Dominican Monastery of St. Jude
On Aug. 18, Sr. Mary Jordan of the Holy Family, OP made her solemn profession at the Dominican Monastery of St. Jude in Marbury, Alabama in the presence of Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi, Archbishop of Mobile; Archbishop Emeritus Oscar H. Lipscomb, Dominican friars and sisters, diocesan clergy, friends, family and her Dominican community. The community in Marbury, founded in 1944, currently numbers eight nuns (including one postulant and one novice) ranging in age from 19 to 86. The 67th Session of the United Nations General Assembly opened on Sept. 18. The key topics to be discussed include climate change and sustainable development. This past June, the RIO + 20 Earth Summit issued a final outcome document that, among other things, calls upon the United Nations to establish a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to complement and expand upon the Millennium Development Goals. These SDGs are expected to set goals and targets needed to facilitate progress in human development in balance with planetary limits.
On Sunday, Sept. 23, the Dominican Sisters of Peace held a Rite of Entrance ceremony for Anne Knight, welcoming her as a new candidate to their congregation of Catholic sisters. As a candidate, Anne will continue on a path of prayer and discernment, determining whether she will eventually make vows as a member of the Dominican Sisters of Peace. In this year of candidacy, she will live with a local community of sisters, participate in their shared life of prayer, study, and service, and continue to learn more about the joys and struggles of being a Dominican Sister.
