Dominican Sisters of Peace – ‘Commissioning of the Ikuzeh Living Kindness Centre for Learning’

KADUNA STATE, NIGERIA – Unseasonable cold and rutted roads did not prevent people from attending the commissioning of the Ikuzeh Livingkindness Centre for Learning on January 27, 2016. The Centre for Learning came about through the collaboration of the local community, Hope for the Village Child Foundation and the Livingkindness Foundation. Dominican Sister of Peace Rita Schwarzenberger, O.P., is a longtime missionary in Nigeria and currently manages Hope for the Village Child.

‘Crowning the Cupola at St. Mary’s Dominican High School’

Randy Havard of Havard Iron Works, LLC, places the Celtic cross on top of the newly placed cupola on St. Mary’s Dominican High School’s Science and Technology Complex’s Veritas Tower. The base of the cross bears the signatures of alumnae who represented the graduating classes from the 1930s to the 1960s. The complex is set to open this spring at the 155-year-old school that traces its roots to Ireland when seven Dominican sisters from St. Mary’s Convent-Cabra, Dublin, Ireland arrived in New Orleans to teach children of Irish immigrants.

Since 1860, St. Mary’s Dominican High School has been a leader of Catholic education in the New Orleans region. The school’s 155-year legacy is rooted in the tradition of prayer, study, community and service. These are the pillars of Dominican life and form the foundation for the Dominican student’s experience.

On Sunday, February 7, the Dominican Sisters of Houston hosted a presentation on “Islamophobia.” The presentation by Mustafaa Carroll, Executive Director of CAIR Texas (Council for American –Islamic Relations) was sponsored by Pax Christi Houston, Center for the Healing of Racism, Houston Peace and Justice Center and the Dominican Sisters.

Faith and Film: The Revenant

Movie Review by Fr. Tom Condon, O.P.

With the Oscars drawing near, I thought I should check out the movie that seems to be the front runner in the race: The Revenant.

There has been a lot of talk about how difficult The Revenant was to make. Director Alejandro González Iñárritu, last year’s Oscar winner for Birdman, took his actors and crew to remote locations in Canada and South America to film the movie. Iñárritu wanted to use locations that would best resemble the remote Western U.S. in 1820. Two time Oscar winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, used natural light for his stunning winter views. Star Leonardo DiCaprio did his own perilous stunts. I certainly appreciate the very difficult conditions everyone endured to make The Revenant. I only wish I liked the movie better. The Revenant would not get my vote as best picture of the year.
