Racine Dominicans – Finding Sanctuary at Bethany Apartments

Dominican Sisters of Peace: ‘Children Participate in Second Annual Peace Camp’

In June the Peace Center hosted the second annual Peace Camp for nineteen children, ages 7-10. The camp is for children “who would not have been able to have a camp experience because of economic circumstances.” The campers were accompanied by Dominican Sisters Suzanne Brauer, Pat Thomas, and Ceal Warner, along with volunteer counselors. Sinsinawa Dominicans – ‘Catholic Sisters Call for Welcoming Refugees’

Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters Ruth Poochigian, Sheila Fitzgerald, Maureen McDonnell, Joan Duerst, Mary Ellen O’Grady, Mary Rathert, Pat Leahy, Miriam Brown, Mary Ann Nelson, and Isabel Rafferty along with Presentation Sister Joy Peterson and others gather on the capitol steps in Madison for the prayer service.

Ten communities of Midwest Catholic Sisters are calling on citizens, President Barack Obama, and federal, state, and local politicians to work together to welcome refugees and are launching a public awareness campaign to make sure potential candidates and voters remember this critical issue when they head to the polls in November.

The United Nations declared June 20 World Refugee Day. In observance of this, a Madison prayer service was held at the Capitol, and a Dubuque prayer service was held on the corner of JFK and Pennsylvania. The public was invited to join Catholic Sisters in praying for refugees and for political leaders.

Aquinas Literacy Center – ‘Virginia Mercado Awarded the Sister Claudia Hinds Scholarship’

Virginia Mercado, a graduate of Aquinas Literacy Center, speaks from the heart after being awarded the Sister Claudia Hinds Scholarship.

On Thursday, June 16, Aquinas Literacy Center (ALC) held its annual Student Awards Celebration. Nine adult learners were celebrated for their graduation from Aquinas’ English as a Second Language (ESL) program.

Virginia Mercado, one of the graduates, was awarded the Sister Claudia Hinds Scholarship. Each year ALC awards the scholarship to a graduate who goes above and beyond the average student. The scholarship was created in memory of Sister Claudia Hinds, the Adrian Dominican Sister who founded ALC. Scholarship funds are used to further the student’s education in English.
