Dominican sisters gather in New York to attend UN event
UN Commission on the Status of Women
The 59th session of the Commission on the Status of Women is taking place March 9–20 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The main focus of the session will be on the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, including current challenges that affect its implementation and the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women. Sister Margaret Mayce, OP (Amityville), DLC UN-NGO representative, is attending, along with eight other sisters representing Dominican Sisters International (DSI): Emmanuela Okafor (Nigeria), Maureen O’Connell (Australia), Marjolein Bruinen (Netherlands), Sandra Ede (Brazil), Bernadine Karge (Chicago, Illinois, United States); Marie Therese Clement, DSI Coordinator based in Rome, Italy; Celestina Veloso Freitas, DSI justice promoter; and Patricia Farrell (Chicago), executive director of the Dominican Sisters’ Conference.
