Dominican Family Build

During the week of August 17–21, 20 sisters, associates and young people from Amityville, Blauvelt, Sparkill, and Sinsinawa participated in the first Dominican Family Build. We all came together to help the people in the Rockaways, Long Island, New York, try to rebuild their homes and their lives.
We worked at three different sites during the week two in Brooklyn, and one in Far Rockaway. We hung dry wall, mudded, and did a lot of sanding. It was hard work but thankfully the weather, which wasn’t too warm, cooperated and all was done in a great spirit of collaboration and fun!
The spirit of family was very evident, as we worked together during the day and then went back to the places where we were staying to share a meal and gather for prayer and reflection on our days. Sister Pat Hogan, OP (Sparkill) brought along a great group from her parish as well as other sisters. The associates, young people, and other friends from Amityville were also there to lend a hand in the project. Sister Maryellen O’Grady, OP (Amityville), director of Dominican Sisters in Committed Collaboration (OPSCC) also joined us.
Many thanks go to those who put us up for the week and those who provided meals for us after a hard day’s work. Thanks so much for the great food! To all those who donated financially to assist us in this build, our sincere thanks to you too! Hope to see you all next year.
Mission San Jose Dominicans
Sister Dulce Sarai Aguilar Rodriguez (right) made her perpetual profession to Sister Gloria Marie Jones, OP, prioress of the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose, on Aug. 9 during a joyous Eucharistic celebration in the motherhouse chapel in Fremont, California. Sister Dulce graduated in June from California State University, Los Angeles, with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish, and will begin teaching fourth grade at Santa Teresita Elementary in East Los Angeles.
Maryknoll Sisters
Sister Paulita Hoffmann, MM, a missioner to China, who spent time during that country’s early Communist era under house arrest, celebrated her 100th birthday Aug. 13. A private celebration with family and friends was held at the Maryknoll Sisters Center, near Ossining, New York. Read more
Molloy College
Molloy College, Rockville Centre, New York, was the host site for the 13th Biennial Dominican Colleges & Universities Colloquium in mid-June. More than 200 participants representing 14 Dominican colleges/universities across the country attended the conference. The theme of the event was “Inspiring Compassion, Fostering Engagement.” Sister Dorothy Fitzgibbons, OP, EdD, Molloy’s vice president for mission integration, served as colloquium coordinator. Keynote speakers were Gregory Heille, OP (Dominican Province of St. Albert the Great), professor of homiletics and academic dean at Aquinas Insitute of Theology; Margaret Mayce, OP (Amityville), NGO representative at the United Nations for the Dominican Leadership Conference; and Toni Harris, OP (Sinsinawa), international promoter for justice and peace for Dominican Sisters International from 2007 to 2013. The next colloquium will be held at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 2016.
