UN Commission on the Status of Women
Dominican sisters gather in New York to attend UN event
The 59th session of the Commission on the Status of Women was held March 9–20 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The main focus of the session was the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, including current challenges that affect its implementation and the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women. Attending were Sister Margaret Mayce, OP (Amityville), DLC UN-NGO representative, along with eight other sisters representing Dominican Sisters International (DSI). Read more

Racine Dominicans
Sisters honor women leaders in Racine, Wisconsin
On March 15, in conjunction with National Women’s History Month and National Catholic Sisters Week, the Racine Dominican Sisters honored three local women for their contributions to the community. Barbara Tylenda, Cherie Griffin and Sharon Thyne were honored in a special prayer service and presentation at Siena Center. Read more

St. Agnes celebrates National Catholic Sisters Week
St. Agnes Academy, established by the Dominican Sisters of Houston in 1906, chose to celebrate National Catholic Sisters Week March 8–14 in a special way. Students wrote letters to sisters and visited their retirement home, St. Dominic Villa. They also watched the documentary film “Women and Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America.” Read more |

Celebrating Sister Bernadette’s 80th birthday
“Sister gives us a reason to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day every day.” This is one of the top 10 reasons students at All Saints Academy, Parsippany, New Jersey, say they love Sister Bernadette Connor. Sister Bernadette, a longtime educator, is a preschool aide at All Saints. In February, The whole school surprised her with a birthday party including bagpipe players and shamrock cookies in honor of her Irish heritage. Sinsinawa Dominicans
Sister Joeann’s work featured in gallery exhibit
Sister Joeann Daley, OP (Sinsinawa), will be featured in “The Evolution of the Artistic Imagination” at Sinsinawa Art Gallery April 11–June 3. Sister Joeann is known for creating intricate art with many layers that blend color, texture, form, and function. Works on display will include sculpture, drawing, lithography, etching and collages on display from as far back as 1968, as well as Sister Joeann’s latest creations: small Styrofoam containers she calls “Styroart.” Sister Joeann applied her years of printmaking knowledge to this new endeavor. Sister doctor to be honored by RENEW International
In this Year of Consecrated Life, RENEW International will honor Blauvelt Dominican Sister Mary Flood, MD with its President’s Award at its 2015 Gala June 4 in West Orange, New Jersey. The President’s Award is given to an individual whose actions exemplify the Christian value of service central to the mission of RENEW International. Sister Mary is a specialist in infectious diseases and internal medicine and associate professor of medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University Medical Center. ‘Feminist economics’ incorporates values, equality
Many participants from all over the globe gathered in New York for the 59th UN Commission on the Status of Women. Numerous events have been hosted by member states and NGOs to discuss issues relating to women and girls such as migration, violence, education, human trafficking, and gender equality. On Friday, March 13, I had the opportunity to attend a session hosted by the International Alliance of Women entitled “Why the Future of Economics and Economic Development Must Be Feminist.” This session was extremely exciting as it brought to my attention a concept I had never heard of before: “feminist economics.” Read article by Dominican Volunteer Kelly Litt

‘The Preaching of Pope Francis’ by Fr. Gregory Heille, OP
Fr. Gregory Heille, OP, professor of homiletics and academic dean at Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, has published “The Preaching of Pope Francis: Missionary Discipleship and the Ministry of the Word.” The book is described as “an inspiring and practical resource for priests, deacons, and anyone involved in the ministry of preaching. [Fr. Gregory] shares the pope'’s vision and example for the preparation and delivery of effective and engaging homilies and for laity invested in the church’s ministry of the Word in a post-Vatican II pastoral context.” The book is available through Liturgical Press.

Film by Dominican friar earns IndieFest awards
Fr. Armando P. Ibáñez, OP (St. Martin de Porres), writer-producer-director, received two IndieFEST film awards—Award of Excellence and Award of Merit Special Mention—for his documentary, “South Texas Gentle Men of Steel – Los Padres.” The film is a tribute to the last two Spanish Dominican friars to minister in San Diego, Texas, and is also about the great impact Dominican friars had on the lives of many Mexican Americans in South Texas. Holy Week at Sinsinawa Mound
The Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters invite the public to worship with them as they pray and celebrate the Paschal Feast beginning with Palm Sunday, March 29. The Eucharist begins at 10:30 a.m., preceded by the procession with palms beginning at 10:15 a.m. The other services include: Holy Thursday, April 2, Mass of the Lord's Supper, 6:15 p.m.; Good Friday, April 3, celebration of the Lord's Passion, 2 p.m.; Holy Saturday, April 4, the Paschal Vigil, 7 p.m.; and Easter Sunday, April 5, Eucharist, 10:30 a.m., and Solemn Easter Vespers, 4:45 p.m.

Mission San Jose Human Rights Study Day April 18
The Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose, Fremont, California, will host “Dominican Defense of Human Rights: A Study Day on Refugee Minors and Families in the Bay Area” from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 18. Speakers include Fr. Jim Barnett, OP; Jose Artiga and Eileen Purcell, founders of SHARE; and Karen Boncher, Refugee Foster Care, Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County. Fee is $10 and includes lunch.
