Dominican Sisters’ Conference Immediately following the DSC convocation, the Annual Meeting of Elected Leaders took place. Building on the energy that had been generated from the convocation, the follow-up meeting moved forward to planning for the future. As the elected leaders tended to their agenda, they seemed to transition from the role of Edgewalker to that of Hearthtender. While they were inspired to think globally, they were challenged to act locally. Read more Las Casas The Las Casas: Dominicans in Ministry with Native Americans, Inc. Board has chosen to collaborate with the McGreal Center for Dominican Historical Studies to archive the history of Las Casas. The McGreal Center provides a unique opportunity to professionally archive the ministry of Dominicans serving in Native American ministry and make this history available to the Dominican Family as well as Dominican University students. Read more Adrian Dominicans Sister Linda Bevilacqua, OP, PhD, president of Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida, was inducted into the Diocese of Brooklyn Inaugural Hall of Fame on Oct. 10. She is the only woman religious among the initial inductees, which include such public figures as former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, film director Martin Scorcese, and actress Mary Tyler Moore. Sister Linda's roots are in the Diocese of Brooklyn; she was born on Long Island, New York, and attended schools staffed by the Amityville Dominican Sisters and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood, Long Island. Read more Dominican Sisters of Houston On Saturday, Sept. 29, the Dominican Sisters of Houston gathered for their fall meeting and to celebrate 130 years in Texas. Following prayer, Sister Carol Mayes, prioress of the Dominican Sisters of Houston, took us back in time as she channeled Mother Mary Agnes Magevney speaking to the sisters in Somerset, Ohio. Mother Mary Agnes met with the sisters to inform them that they had been invited to Galveston by Bishop Gallagher. Twenty sisters boarded a train and arrived four days later in Galveston on shortly before noon Friday, Sept. 29, 1882. Read more Books Fr. Andrew Carl Wisdom, OP, and Sister Christine Kiley, ASCJ, have published a new book that draws from their experiences with real life discerners. The book offers reflections and activities that provide direction and inspire greater peace during the process of discerning a life choice. They first describe the Church’s invitation to make a generous gift of self to God through married life, an intentional single life, priesthood, or religious life. The reflections are arranged by the common stages of discernment journeys and are designed to help the reader move from creating and cultivating a vocational interest to a decision to follow or abandon that interest.
