Peace Dominicans
New ministry center in New Orleans a ‘sign of peace’

In September, the Dominican Sisters of Peace opened a new outreach ministry in the Marlyville-Fontainebleau neighbor of New Orleans, not far from St. Mary’s Dominican High School. The Peace Center is a former convenience store that has been transformed into a multipurpose facility. It will offer after-school programs, computer access, a children’s library and reading center, and spiritual respite. Read more

Racine Dominicans
Eco-Justice Center celebrates 10th anniversary

The Eco-Justice Center, a sponsored ministry of the Racine Dominicans in Racine, Wisconsin, is celebrating 10 years of environmental education this month. Recent activities at the center included a Fall Festival, Beach and Neighborhood Cleanup, and a Brick Oven Pizza Bake. Photos and a new video with an interview with Sister Janet Weyker, OP, director, are available on the center’s web site. Read more

Dominican novices join Capuchins for Transitus

On Oct. 3, novices from the Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus (Western Province) joined the Capuchin friars at the National Shrine of St. Francis in San Francisco, California, to celebrate the vigil of the Feast of St. Francis. Read more, view photos

Empowering women and girls for a sustainable future

The NGO Committee on the Status of Women (CSW) is working diligently to ensure that the voices of women are well represented and accounted for in the post-2015 agenda. This year, the CSW is addressing one area of concern from the Beijing Platform (an action plan document for advancing women’s rights) per month. October’s theme focused on women and poverty. Maryknoll Sisters
Sister named Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania

Sister Janice McLaughlin, MM, president of Maryknoll Sisters, was honored as a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania Oct. 15 at the governor’s residence in Harrisburg. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Sister Janice has been president of Maryknoll Sisters since 2008. Prior to her presidency, she spent nearly 40 years living and working as a missioner in Africa. Sister appointed to national board

Sister Lois Paha, OP (Adrian), was elected vice chair of the board of directors of the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions (FDLC). Sister Lois is director of the office of formation for the Diocese of Tucson, Arizona.

Messiah Concert at Sinsinawa Mound

The 23rd Annual Messiah Concert will be held at Sinsinawa Mound at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16. Chorale Midwest, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, will team with Dubuque Community String Orchestra to perform selections from George Frideric Handel’s Messiah.
