Dominican Sisters Conference The Planning Committee for the Elected Leaders' Assembly has been hard at work for the past few months arranging for the fall meeting for leadership. The theme chosen for this assembly is: “Dominican Sisters Conference: Deepening Dialogue, Nurturing Hope, Birthing Life.” The deadline for registration is Aug. 29. Download registration materials (PDF) UN Briefing Sister Margaret Mayce, OP (Amityville), DLC/NGO representative at the United Nations, recently returned from Nairobi, Kenya, where she attended the Assembly of Dominican Sisters of Africa May 16–23. College Preaching Conference During the week of May 24, 36 students from Dominican universities/colleges or colleges with a Dominican presence gathered at Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois, for the ninth national “Preaching in Action” Conference. These young people came together to learn about the Dominican charism of preaching and how that charism can be incorporated into their own lives and passed on to others. They were given the opportunity to experience themselves as preachers using the mediums of art, dance, drama, and music. Read more Caldwell Dominicans Sister Mary McGuinness, OP, received the inaugural Msgr. Thomas A. Kleissler Award on June 2 at the RENEW International 12th Annual Gala in West Orange, New Jersey. This award is presented to an individual person who exemplifies the missionary and visionary qualities of RENEW International’s founder: to serve the needs of today’s Church through innovative pastoral services and resources that build vibrant faith communities of hope and Gospel action. Sister Gerardine Mueller, OP, professional artist and professor emerita at Caldwell College, was given an an honorary degree (Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa). during Caldwell College's 69th annual commencement. Read more Dominicans in the Americas The Steering Committee of the 500th Anniversary of Dominicans in the Americas welcomes articles from historians, theologians, justice promoters and preachers of the Dominican Family to submit articles or papers for publication for the upcoming 500th Anniversary of this preaching which changed the direction of the New World. Read more Honduras The weekend of May 20-22 in San Pedro Sula occasioned the first-ever gathering of all friars, sisters and laity in Honduras. The Justice and Peace Commission of the San Pedro Sula Dominican Family called together representation from the friars, the five Dominican women’s congregations working in Honduras, and some 29 laity. The event was planned as a commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Dominicans to Americas.
