Sparkill Dominicans
A tale of two sisters, and a surprise gift
The Sparkill Dominican Sisters were surprised with a gift of three paintings by John Thorpe, father of Alice Mary Thorpe, founder of their congregation. The paintings were presented by Sister Anne Lythgoe, OP (Peace) following her keynote at the Sparkill congregation’s assembly in June. The paintings had hung in the congregational offices of the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine de Ricci, which merged with the Dominican Sisters of Peace last December. Read more |

Volunteers close year of service with retreat
From July 10 to 14 in Ossining, New York, 17 Dominican Volunteers celebrated the completion of their year of service at Mariandale Retreat Center, a ministry of the Dominican Sisters of Hope. Congregation welcomes 201st associate
On July 15, the Adrian Dominican Sisters formally welcomed their 201st associate, Mary Margaret Bommarito. The ritual of acceptance took place during Vespers in St. Catherine Chapel, on the Adrian Dominican Sisters’ motherhouse campus. Mary Margaret, formerly Adrian Dominican Sister Bernard Michelle Felling, met the congregation as a student at St. Dominic School and Dominican High School, both in Detroit. Even after formally leaving the congregation, Mary Margaret taught with the sisters at Dominican High School and remained connected with the congregation. Read more, view photos

In a recent blog post (“Where is the novitiate?”), Sister Jennifer Schaaf, OP (Blauvelt) writes about her experience at the International Dominican Youth Movement World Meeting in Bogota, Colombia. More than 200 youths attended the event July 7–17 on the campus of St. Thomas University.

Sister Mary Ann shares insights on Middle East
Sister Mary Ann Pevas, OP (Racine) is a retired university professor who taught economics at Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota. She had the unique experience of going on sabbatical to Cairo, Egypt, where she learned Arabic and spent time talking with the “ordinary people” of Egypt. She also taught at Bethlehem University in Palestine. She is passionate about sharing her knowledge and experience of the Middle East. She has a blog, “Insights about Egypt,” and was recently featured in a video interview with Sister Lois Aceto.

“Nothing simplifies life like a zombie apocalypse…” The summer movie “World War Z” proved thought-provoking for two Dominican student brothers from the Province of St. Joseph. Their reflections (“Zombie Apocalypse: Life Among the Ruins” by Br. Edmund McCullough, OP, and “Zombie Apocalypse: A Plague” by Br. Pier Giorgio Denger, OP) were published in Dominicana.

General Chapter of the Order of Preachers
The General Chapter of the Order of Preachers opened July 22 with Mass concelebrated by Fr. Bruno Cadore, OP, master of the order, and his predecessors Fr. Timothy Radcliffe, OP, and Fr. Carlos Aspiroz Costa, OP. More than 100 Dominican friars from around the world are participating in the chapter, which is being held in Trogir, Croatia.

Caldwell College receives WWII writings
Maxine Giannini, widow of Ugo Giannini, a former Caldwell College art professor, recently donated two drawings and a book to the college’s Jennings Library. Sister Gerardine Mueller, OP, professor emerita and founder of the college’s art department, was quoted in an article about the donation in the local newspaper. Caldwell College was founded by the Caldwell Dominican Sisters.
