Lumen Christi Award
Catholic Extension honors sister with $25,000 grant

Catholic Extension has announced that Dominican Sister Gabriella Williams of the Diocese of San Bernardino, California, has been named the winner of the 34th annual Lumen Christi ("Light of Christ") Award. Williams plans to use the award grant to develop a technology room within the Communidad de San Jose, a facility for adult and youth education. Read article in San Bernardino Press-Enterprise

Sister to participate in Economic Recovery Symposium

Adrian Dominican Sister Corinne Florek, OP, has been invited to the White House to take part in the Sept. 22 White House Symposium on Promoting Economic Recovery and Job Creation through Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships. Sister Corinne is the director of Mercy Partnership Fund and the Religious Communities Investment Fund (RCIF). Read more

General Assembly underway; International Day of Peace

The 66th Session of the General Assembly formally opened on Sept. 13. The president for this year’s session is Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, from Qatar. On assuming his position, Mr. Al-Nasser said, “The road to success must be founded on the principle of partnership and on a deep sense of justice and responsibility… The 66th Session of the General Assembly is … our opportunity to prove that we … have the courage, tenacity and wisdom to seek creative and visionary solutions. That we can work together to produce results … And that when faced with those few who choose force and brutality, we choose peace, human rights and democracy.” Read more

Dominican Sisters of Hope
Sister honored with Soroptimist International Ruby Award

Sister Deborah Blow, OP, a member of the Dominican Sisters of Hope and the executive director and co-founder of the North Country Mission of Hope, will receive the Ruby Award from the Soroptimist International of the Adirondacks organization. Sister Debbie’s leadership and ministry with the poor in Nicaragua has been documented in film and in national media. The Mission has just completed its 42nd trip to Nicaragua. Read more

Common Dominican Novitiate
Three women begin their 10-month experience

The Collaborative Dominican Novitiate (CDN) is a joint effort by the congregations of women religious in the Dominican order to provide members in initial formation with an experience of the larger Dominican family. The purpose of the canonical year in the CDN is to provide a quality experience of Dominican

Catherine of Siena Fellowship
Villanova University seeks applicants for fall 2012 position

The Ethics Program of Villanova University seeks applicants for a Catherine of Siena Teaching Fellowship. Responsibilities include a 3/3 load teaching the sophomore/junior level core ethics course, research, plus committee work for the program. A Ph.D. is preferred. The position is for one year, renewable up to three years. Candidates should have either an expertise in Christian ethics, with a competency to teach Western philosophical ethics, or an expertise in Western philosophical ethics and a competency to teach Christian ethics. Staff members of Heartland Spirituality Center, a ministry of the Dominican Sisters of Peace in Great Bend, Kansas, have prepared a prayer service for the International Day of Peace today, Sept. 21.

Springfield Dominican Sisters featured in NRRO video

The National Religious Retirement Office chose Sacred Heart Convent in Springfield, Illinois, as the location to film a new video about caring for and supporting retired sisters. The video features Mark Quinn, almnus of St. Walter's School in Chicago; Sister Mary Laurentia Fenlon, OP; Sister Elizabeth Ann Bedinghaus, OP; and Sister Mary Aniceta Skube, OP.

Dominicana launches online edition

The student brothers of the Dominican Province of St. Joseph have launched a new initiative under the aegis of the studentate publication Dominicana: a daily blog. The web site, moderated by a Dominican priest, will publish short essays and reflections by student brothers. The print edition will continue to publish semi-annually. From Dominican Daily.
