Nuclear Disarmament

Today the world is at another turning point. The assumption that nuclear weapons are indispensable to keeping the peace is crumbling.  Disarmament is back on the global agenda—and not a moment to soon.  A groundswell of new international initiatives will soon emerge to move this agenda forward.

Dominican Federation passed a corporate commitment calling for Nuclear Disarmament. Sign the Petition to President Obama for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons. Sign the United for Peace and Justice petition to be delivered at the May 2010 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference Provides information copies or links to petition.  Collects hard copies of petitions and mails to appropriate groups.

Wars are continually being waged and nuclear threats continue

Include prayers for nuclear disarmament in your prayers for peace.

Plans days of prayer for peace:

A Million Minutes of Peace

UN Conference on the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT): September 24-25, 2009
President Obama chairs a state-level meeting of the U.N. Security Council on nuclear nonproliferation and nuclear disarmament. United Nations

Write to US government/White House regarding the issue.  A 2/3rds vote by the Senate is required for ratification.

Provide list and addresses of officials. Provide sample contents for letters.

The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty of 1991 expires in December.  Presidents Obama and Medvedev will meet to set another treaty in place.

Keep informed.  An action plan to be developed.

Provide information on the Action Plan being developed

Conference on Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT): April-May, 2010

Place a note on your desk/door: “I am praying for nuclear disarmament.”
Share with family/friends/coworkers that you are “praying/working for nuclear disarmament.”
Phone/write President Obama and members of congress informing them that you are “praying for nuclear disarmament and expectations that they will implement NPT and vote for CTBT.
Participate in awareness campaigns calling for others to join in the above actions.

Keep membership posted on developments and other actions that may be developed.

Plan vigils/walks
Encourage letters to the editors.
Pray and support those who engage in civil disobedience.
