The Issue: Death Penalty
Everyone is created in the image of God, and our respect for all life is at the root of our opposition to the death penalty.

The death penalty is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment.

It violates the right to life.

It is irrevocable and can be inflicted on the innocent. It has never been shown to deter crime more effectively than other punishments.

Seventeen Dominican congregations and one province
work against the death penalty. The Dominican Sisters, USA (Federation) has also spoken out against capital punishment. This continues to be a concern of DLC members and efforts to oppose the death penalty take place across the US.

We pledge to:

Work for abolition of the death penalty;
Participate in the campaign For Whom The Bells Toll;
Participate in state wide anti-death penalty campaigns;
Encourage congregations/provinces to create a corporate stance on the
death penalty.
