School Action Plans 2011

We the preachers of Colegio San Antonio in Isabela, Puerto Rico, commit to preach the gospel in the following ways:

Keeping in mind the pillar of community, we wish to share with our brothers at St. Pius X High School, highlighting the brotherhood that we have developed here. We seek to share with their school community, so that we can strengthen the union that began to grow with their visit to our school.

We the preachers of Dominican Academy in New York, New York, commit to preach the gospel in the following ways:

  1. We will focus on the education of the four pillars in a relative and enthusiastic approach. We intend on using this lesson during the freshmen retreat giving the new students an inspiring foundation for Dominican life.
  2. In addition to this, we will bring back the various forms of prayer we learned about at this conference which promoted self-expression, creativity, the use of our bodies, and art. For example, we can use Taizé, a form of meditative prayer through song, in our Advent and reconciliation prayer services.
  3. We will stress the importance of community building, as well as fun in community building through various forms of prayer such as the dances of inclusion we learned from Brother Joe.
  4. Finally, we will bring back the image of the two feet: sharing in a Dominican life through a balance of contemplation and action which will help us learn about and become more passionate in our strive for social justice.

We the preachers of Dominican High School in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, commit to preach the gospel in the following ways:

  • We plan to focus on one pillar per quarter.
  • We plan to offer more service opportunities.
  • We plan to offer a very large variety of service opportunities.
  • We plan to have awareness campaigns throughout the year.
  • We plan to have different fundraisers throughout the year for a central charity.
  • We plan to bring the theme of “Who am I?” to our school for the year of 2011-2012.

We the preachers of Edgewood High School in Madison, Wisconsin, commit to preach the gospel in the following ways:

  1. During our school’s monthly “Dominican Day” we will assist in coordinating homeroom time to celebrate Dominican Feast Days and inform students of Dominican responses to injustices in our world.
  2. We will lead prayer at our school’s Board of Trustees meetings and teach its members about our Dominican Mission.
  3. Twice monthly we will volunteer to serve meals in our city’s St. Martin de Porres Community meal program.
  4. As peer ministers, we will strive to incorporate Dominican prayer and awareness of our Dominican heritage into our school’s prayer services and liturgies.

We the preachers of Fenwick High School in Oak Park, Illinois, commit to preach the gospel. We plan to:

  1. Continue our tradition of planning and directing all underclassmen retreats.
  2. Conduct a mini-preaching conference as training for our Dominican Identity club.
  3. Work as a team at least once each month in a local service organization.
  4. Promote attendance at daily mass by personal invitation and preaching regularly during the Eucharist.
  5. Improve the quality of classroom prayer by designing a prayer resource which we will put in every classroom.
  6. Make a presentation at our Open House events which stresses the preaching mission of our entire Fenwick and Dominican families.

We the preachers of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in La Canada, California, commit to preach the gospel in the following ways:

  1. Bring to life the 4 pillars in combination with Dominican heroes and heroines (skits, Mass, etc.).
  2. During Veritas week, create a video series which describes and educates students about the Dominican Mission.
  3. Get involved with the Dominican work in Kenya, raising money, educating, etc.

We the preachers of Lacordaire Academy in Upper Montclair, New Jersey, commit to preach the gospel in the following ways:

  1. By creating a leadership team to research, plan and organize school-wide assemblies on the following issues:
    • The social justice signs of the times.
    • Service opportunities for all grades.
    • Preaching through art, song and movement.
  2. By integrating social justice work on the subjects of human trafficking, immigration and education by among other opportunities, sponsoring a school in an underprivileged area of the world.
  3. By organizing and leading retreats open to all members of student body.
  4. By helping to create a greater sense of community through song, education on the 4 Pillars of Dominican Life and the example set by the Preachers to create a chain-reaction of voices and minds to praise, to bless and to preach.

We the preachers of Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, Illinois, commit to preach the gospel in the following ways:

  • We will use our 2011-2012 school year focus on the pillar of study to inform the mind while transforming the heart.
  • We will bring new elements to our life of prayer, such as Taizé and the Trilingual response.
  • We will work to foster community connections with the Dominican High Schools in our area with the intention of engaging in combined service projects.
  • We will strive to increase awareness of school justice issues with specific emphasis on helping our Dominican family in Africa obtain a quality water source.

We the preachers of Mount St. Dominic Academy in Caldwell, New Jersey, commit to preach the gospel in the following ways:

  • As part of the Dominican Preachers at our school, we would like to offer the opportunity for our fellow classmates to preach through their actions by creating volunteer services for the entire student body to become involved in.
  • We also plan on emphasizing on the connection of justice and the Dominican tradition, especially when our school hosts its annual justice day.

We the preachers of Our Lady of the Elms in Akron, Ohio, commit to preach the gospel in the following ways:

To enliven the spirituality of our school by:

  • Improving attendance at our weekly prayer services.
  • Planning more innovative prayer services.
  • Increasing awareness of and educating our student body about our Dominican heritage through quarterly assemblies or activities.

We the preachers of Rosary High School in Aurora, Illinois, commit to preach the gospel in the following ways:

  • We will incorporate liturgical dance at our all school monthly mass.
  • At our freshmen retreat, upperclass women will teach the freshmen how to make rosaries as a sign of community.
  • We will continue our “picture-a-preacher” project.

We the preachers of Sacred Heart Griffin High School in Springfield, Illinois, commit to preach the gospel in the following ways:

  • To provide more educational opportunities, such as global awareness, organizing school assemblies and the promotion of social justice.
  • To integrate more Dominican traditions, such as the decoration of four pillars within our school.
  • To provide more service opportunities, such as organizing trips to or speakers from the Hope School.
  • To reach out to incoming freshmen through orientation, freshman focus, and freshman Theology class.

We the preachers of San Domenico School in San Anselmo, California, commit to preach the gospel in the following ways:

  • All school assembly on Dominican Pillars
  • Presentation to high school on preaching conference – historical perspective
  • Action plan: help out more in the community, get students to volunteer
  • Raise funds for mosquito nets in Africa
  • Adopt Sisters
  • Prayer Service

We the preachers of St. Agnes Academic High School in College Point, New York, commit to preach the gospel in the following ways:

To raise awareness for women and children (Human Trafficking) in the following ways:

  1. Forming a club
  2. Raising money for women’s shelters
  3. Raising awareness through school community – TV studio, newspaper, and speakers
  4. Fund raising
  5. $1 for dress down day
  6. Sports games to raise money
  7. Bake sales
  8. Going to visit providence houses

We the preachers of St. Agnes Academy in Memphis, Tennessee, commit to preach the gospel in the following ways:

  • Expand our commitment to service by not only giving our time to help others, but to work towards helping resolve issues that cause inhuman treatment.
  • Re-energize out retreats by implementing more forms of prayer through art and movement.
  • Planning a one-day retreat for 8th graders that explores each of the four pillars.
  • Working to create a stronger identity for our Dominican Leadership Team.

We the preachers of St. Agnes Academy in Houston, Texas, commit to preach the gospel in the following ways:

  1. Make four videos that are directed towards the Dominican life that will be put on Veritas TV in the morning.
  2. Plan and promote Dominican week.
  3. Campus ministry team and Dominican Preaching Team being more visible in the school.
  4. Doing a service project once a semester as a preaching team.

We the preachers of St. Catherine High School in Racine, Wisconsin, commit to preach the gospel in the following ways:

  • To preach through using the dances of inclusion. We would like to begin with the freshmen class to help them feel included, respected, united and safe to be who they are.
  • To preach through Taizé, starting with our sophomore class. It would take place during religion class.
  • To preach through the use of the four pillars: Prayer, Study, Community and Preaching. One way that we will do this is by having visual images of each pillar throughout the school.
  • To preach by our words and actions.

We the preachers of St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School in West Islip, New York, commit to preach the gospel in the following ways:

  • Unlike all of your schools, SJB was not founded by a Dominican community. We are a diocesan school with only a couple of Dominican Sisters. Therefore, we commit ourselves to helping the rest of our students and faculty to know more of what we learned here.
  • We pledge to hold monthly meetings so that we may raise greater awareness of the Dominican tradition and inform our school of the importance of working for justice on our world. In these meetings we will be passionate about working hard to gradually achieve many goals such as:
    1. Deciding, exciting and igniting our upcoming plans to spread what we’ve learned at the Dominican High School Preaching Conference to people in our community and beyond.
    2. Educating our fellow students about the significance of the 4 Pillars of Dominican tradition which will enable them to better understand the work that the Dominican Preachers in our school look forward to accomplishing.
    3. Increasing student knowledge of current social issues through our own preaching. By doing this, hopefully, we will inspire them to go out into their own communities and preach the Gospel.
    4. Becoming more involved in morning prayer.
    5. Staying motivated so that we may continue to formulate new ideas about how to work towards the greater good on a local and eventually global scale.

We the preachers of St. Mary’s Dominican High School in New Orleans, Louisiana, commit to preach the gospel in the following ways:

  1. To make a constant effort to maintain a relationship with the other Dominican Schools from this conference through the use of technology and school to school visits.
  2. To incorporate different forms of prayer such as Taizé and Tai Chi Chah.
  3. To collaborate with our Fine Arts Department to enhance our school masses with new songs and liturgical movement.
  4. To find additional ways to make the Dominican Preachers more visible in the school, such as educating our classmates in social justice issues like human trafficking.

We the preachers of St. Pius X High School in Houston, Texas, commit to preach the gospel in the following ways:

  1. To explore ways our school faith community might raise awareness, advocacy and funding for water in East Africa together and in collaboration with other Dominican High Schools.
  2. To host the preachers from our sister school, the Colegio San Antonio in Puerto Rico, in our great home state of Texas in the Spring of 2012.
  3. To invite our Dominican Iraqi Sisters to our campus to share their story with all in our community with an effort to raise awareness and hope for victims of violence and war in Iraq.

We the preachers of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Hammond, Louisiana, commit to preach the gospel in the following ways:

  1. Through service efforts to raise money for a new water well at a Dominican school in Kenya.
  2. By becoming more aware and informed about not only our patron saint, St. Thomas Aquinas, but also St. Dominic and other influential Dominican saints.
  3. By standing up for injustices and leading our student body through our actions more than our words.
  4. By encouraging our peers to participate more in all-school masses, class masses, and Thursday morning prayer services.
