A
Journey Into Love
Meditating with Piers Plowman
Mary Clemente Davlin, OP
Piers Plowman, a fourtheenth-century English poem, is recognized
as a masterpiece of literature, but is almost unknown as a spiritual
treasure and guide. A Journey Into
Love is a book of passages from
this poem with brief commentary and questions for private meditation
or group discussion and with beautiful photographic illustrations
from the the poet's England. Piers is a non-seist, experiential
poem exploring through colorful metaphor the great relligious mysteries.
Its sense of the relatioship of nature with God is an early sort
of ecological spirituality. Its stress on social justice, ont eh
importance of marriage, and on the ethics of love are peculiarly
attractive to 21st Centruey persons.
Mary Clemente Davlin, OP, is a Sinsinawa Dominican Sister and
an emerita professor of English at Dominican University in River
Forest, Illinois. She has written two other books on Piers Plowman:
A Game of Heuene: Word Play and the Meaning of Piers Plowman B (Boydell
and Brewer, 1989) and The Place of God in Piers Plowman and Medieval
Art (Ashgate, 2001), and numerous journal articles. In addition to
teaching, she gives workshops and retreats on the spirituality of
the poem.
