‘Sparkill Dominican Associates…Making a Difference!’

The Sparkill Dominican Associates in New York provided an ice cream social for the Sisters to celebrate the end of their monthlong project to collect pajamas and books for children who go to bed each night having to wear the clothing they wore all day because they are either living in shelters or their families lack the resources to provide them with sleepwear. Having collected 730 pairs of pajamas and accompanying books, the Associates and Sisters wrapped each pair of pajamas, along with an age-appropriate book for bedtime reading, which will be donated to children in area shelters in collaboration with Pajama Game.

Dominican Sisters of Adrian Welcomed New Associate in Chicago

November 7, 2018, Chicago – Sherrie Ashley, a retired special education teacher and current teacher’s aide living in Manteno, Illinois, became the newest Adrian Dominican Associate during the annual Fall Chapter Assembly of the Adrian Dominican Sisters’ Dominican Midwest Mission Chapter, based in Chicago. The assembly was held October 27 at the Mercy Center.

The ritual included a brief introduction by Sister Norine Burns, OP, Sherrie’s mentor; Sherrie’s formal acceptance of the call to be known as an Adrian Dominican Associate; the signing of the formal documents of commitment; and Sherrie’s reception of the Adrian Dominican Associates logo.

National Dominican Associate Directors Met at Dominican Convent in Sparkill

The National Dominican Associate Directors met at Dominican Convent in Sparkill, October 26-28, 2018. Twenty-seven Associate Directors, Co-directors, and congregational leadership liaisons for Associates spent time to discuss issues and share ideas. As part of the weekend, Sr. Margaret Mayce, OP (Amityville) gave an inspiring and challenging presentation to the NDAD members and a number of Associates from the New York/New Jersey congregations. Sr. Margaret, who is the NGO representative for the Dominican Family at the United Nations in New York, spoke on: “The Dominican Call to Justice: Think Globally, Act Locally.” Her presentation was livestreamed to hundreds of Associates and Sisters throughout the United States. Faith and Film: Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Can You Ever Forgive Me tells the true story of Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy), a writer of biographies in the 1980’s-1990’s. Lee was moderately successful in her writing. As the film opens, she is planning to write a biography of entertainer Fanny Brice, although her agent and publisher show no interest in the project.

Lee is running out of money, and needs to find some way to pay the rent. In her research on Fanny Brice, Lee comes across a letter written and signed by Fanny. She takes it to a book store. The owner tells Lee she will buy it for a modest amount. However, the letter would be worth a lot more if it was more substantial. Lee forges a P.S. on the letter, and sells it to the book store. Seeing this as an easy way to make some money, Lee begins to forge other letters by literary celebrities, including Noel Coward and Dorothy Parker. She soon is selling these forged letters and signatures for several hundred dollars apiece.
