Tacoma Dominican Sister Peg Murphy was one of four people honored at a celebration in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Jan. 16. The fifth annual “Redeeming the Prophetic Vision” interfaith service was held at Urban Grace Church in downtown Tacoma, Washington.

During the service, Sister Peg and the other honorees were named to the Tacoma Civil Rights Honor Roll for their ongoing dedication to fostering an inclusive civic community.

Sister Peg is the executive director of Catherine Place, a sponsored ministry of the Tacoma Dominican Community. Catherine Place is committed to improving the quality of life for all women, especially those impacted by poverty, violence and loss. The mission statement of Catherine Place is “to create a gentle and sacred space for each woman to claim her dignity and worth … we welcome and honor her and we provide opportunities for learning and spiritual growth.”

“I am inspired every day by Peg’s gentle presence, strong mind, wonderful collaboration and powerful action,” said July Mladineo, associate director of Catherine Place. “Her ministries to the poor, marginalized and vulnerable members of society are most dear to her heart. Peg is definitely a ‘voice for the voiceless’ as she works tirelessly for the dignity of each person.

“Peg’s service stands out immediately when one is in her presence. She is gifted with a deep sense of compassion, great humor, and a clear vision of working toward justice and peace for all. For those who have the privilege of spending time with her, she is known to spread joy wherever she goes.”

Sister Peg has been a Tacoma Dominican for more than 50 years. She has been an educator and pastoral minister, and has served on the congregational leadership team.
