Mount Saint Mary College Cardinal Timothy Dolan visited Mount Saint Mary College this summer to celebrate mass preceding a four-day philosophy workshop of international scholars. Cardinal Dolan first visited the college as an archbishop in 2009, when he was awarded an honorary degree. Eighty-five scholars attended the philosophy workshop. This year’s “Thomas Aquinas and the Mind/Body Problem” discussions, with topics from “Losing Your Mind, Finding Your Soul” to “Natural Philosophy and Biology,” included presentations by Bishop Morerod from Switzerland; Candace Vogler, Ph.D., University of Chicago; William Carroll, University of Oxford (England); Fr. James Brent, OP, and Michael Gorman, Ph.D., Catholic University of America; John O'Callaghan, Ph.D. and Alfred Freddoso, Ph.D. of the University of Notre Dame; and also graduate students. Plans are underway for a third annual workshop next summer. Mount Saint Mary College was founded by the Dominican Sisters of Hope, who opened Mount Saint Mary Academy in 1883 in Newburgh, New York. The insitution became a four-year liberal arts college in 1959. |
