Blauvelt, Sinsinawa Dominicans elect new leadership

The Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York, are pleased to announce that the following sisters have been elected to serve on the Leadership Team for the next six years.
Sister Catherine Howard, OP, who is currently serving as councilor, Sisters of St. Dominic, Blauvelt, New York, has been elected as president.
Sister Michaela Connolly, OP, who is currently serving as coordinator of Ryan White Program, Dominican Sisters Family Health Services, Bronx, New York, has been elected as councilor.
Sister Anne Daniel Young, who is currently on sabbatical in Hopewell Junction, New York, has been elected as councilor.
Sister Joan Agro, OP, who is currently serving as pPrincipal, Our Lady of Victory Academy, Dobbs Ferry, New York, has been elected as councilor.
Their leadership term will begin June 26. We offer gratitude to Sisters Mary Malone, OP; Catherine Howard, OP; Dorothy Maxwell, OP; and Patricia Howell, OP who have faithfully served the congregation for the past six years.

The Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa held their 23rd General Chapter April 5-12, 2011, in Green Lake, Wisconsin. During this time, the sisters held their Chapter of Affairs, at which the congregation set direction for the next five years, and their Chapter of Elections, during which a new prioress and council were elected. More than 230 sisters attended the chapter.
The newly elected prioress is Sister Mary Ellen Gevelinger, OP, Madison, Wis. The Council-elect includes Vicaress Sister Mary Howard Johnstone, OP, Milwaukee, Wis.; and Sisters Mary Rathert, OP, Spokane, Wash.; Pam Mitchell, OP, Richfield, Minn.; Kathleen Phelan, OP, Nyack, N.Y.; and Julie Schwab, OP, Denver, Colo. They will be installed Saturday, July 2, 2011, and serve until 2016.
The Sinsinawa Dominicans affirmed their mission statement of being called as Catholic sisters to proclaim the Gospel through preaching and teaching in order to participate in the building of a holy and just society. The sisters sought the Holy Spirit’s guidance throughout chapter. Sister Mary Rathert said, “Through our Chapter conversations and prayer, we expressed a strong desire for collaboration with others and an awareness of our inter-connection with all of creation.” The new direction statement calls the sisters to “…speak courageously and risk for justice… reverence Earth… dream globally and collaborate intentionally, search contemplatively and study communally, and explore the emerging Wisdom of God.”
