Dominican Institute for the Arts
Annual gathering is July 27–30 in Springfield, Illinois

Sister Mary Fran Gorman, OP

The Dominican Institute for the Arts (DIA) began 15 years ago with Dominican artists searching for a way to preach through their art and incorporate art in preaching. Today there are more than 100 members from convents and priories; lay and associate. Members are from every corner of the United States. We have members from England, Argentina and South Africa. Join us for a celebration of the arts. Take time to discover and release your inner artist.

Each year, the DIA gathers at a Dominican institution in some part of the United States. We celebrate the art we preach, and learn from each other’s gifts. We are challenged and inspired by gifted speakers. At the end of the gathering, we present our highest award, named after our brother Giovanni de Fiesole, The Fra Angelico Award, to one of our outstanding artists.

This year’s theme, “Heritage Our Heart—Future Our Hope,” reflects the history of the order and the DIA. The theme is apropos since this is the 15th anniversary of the DIA which has given us “heart” and enlightened our “future.”

This year’s guest speaker is well-known producer and director of opera Peter Sellars. His work with the opera “Hercules,” which opened in Chicago this month, has been highly acclaimed. Mr. Sellars believes that all art should bring people to God. He will be addressing this and more during his three talks.

A festival of nature’s art will inspire members to create to their own art. Prayer and reflection are an integral part of the growth and preaching. Throughout our time together, the glory of God’s art permeates the gathering.

The gala on Friday evening features a musical concert, a gallery of member art, a silent auction and raffle. This fundraiser is a unique way of passing on the Good News since the people of Springfield are invited to attend.

This year’s gathering will be held at Sacred Heart Convent in Springfield. There are brief opportunities for participants to tour sites of interest on their own before and/or after the conference.

Registration materials are available online, or e-mail dia.preacher@yahoo.com.
